We currently have a great assignment for a Lead Bridge Inspector with one of our top clients.  Our client is a full-service consulting firm offering a wide array of Program and Construction Management, Project Controls and Engineering services.

Job Responsibilities

The Lead Bridge Inspector will lead an inspection team responsible for planning, preparing and performing a field inspection of a bridge, signal, sign or other highway ancillary structure.  The Lead Bridge Inspector is responsible for the overall management and supervision of an inspection team composed of one or more inspectors.  This person will assure that inspections within the jurisdiction of the team are performed on-time and in accordance with the NBIS and the applicable US State's latest policies and procedures.  The location of this position is in Winchester, VA or Dulles, VA and responsibilities include:

  • Reviews existing bridge / structure as-built plans and previous inspection reports to become intimately familiar with structure designs and previously reported deficiencies
  • Investigates sites to determine the best means of bridge inspection access and maintenance of traffic requirements needed to perform an inspection
  • Mentors junior bridge inspectors
  • Works within the established project schedules
  • Coordinates with other inspectors, bridge access equipment and maintenance of traffic (MOT) vendors, testing technicians and others as directed by client’s Project Manager
  • Leads pre-inspection meetings on-site
  • Reviews structure's previous load rating to determine if a new load rating is required
  • Attends project meetings as required
  • Assures inspection work zones are safely set up, and all applicable safety protocols are being followed
  • Writes inspection reports
  • Promotes a work environment that fosters good employee morale with emphasis on mutual respect
Job Requirements

Specific qualifications for the Lead Bridge Inspector role include one of five ways to qualify.  The qualified candidate must, at a minimum:

1.  Be a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) in a US State or Territory; or

2.  Have five years bridge inspection experience and have successfully completed an FHWA approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course (FHWA-NHI-130055 Safety of In-Service Bridges); or

3.  Be certified as a Level III or IV Bridge Safety Inspector under the National Society of Professional Engineer’s program for National Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) and have successfully completed an FHWA approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course (FHWA-NHI-130055 Safety of In-Service Bridges); or

4.  Have all of the following:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in engineering from a college or university accredited by or determined as substantially equivalent by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology; and
  2. Successfully passed the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying Fundamentals of Engineering examination; and
  3. Two years of bridge inspection experience; and
  4. Successfully completed an FHWA approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course (FHWA-NHI-130055 Safety of In-Service Bridges); or

5. Have all of the following:

  1.  An associate’s degree in engineering or engineering technology from a college or university accredited by or determined as substantially equivalent by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology; and
  2. Four years of bridge inspection experience; and
  3. Successfully completed an FHWA approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course (FHWA-NHI-130055 Safety of In-Service Bridges)

Additional qualifications are as follows:

  • If the Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges (FHWA-NHI-130055) course was taken more than three years ago, the candidate must have successfully completed a bridge inspection refresher training course (FHWA-NHI-130053) within the last three years
  • Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Previous Structure and Bridge Engineering design experience with VDOT, MDSHA or DDOT is preferred
  • Experience using Microstation or AutoCAD is preferred
  • Proficiency with BrR (AASHTOWare Bridge Rating) software, STAAD, MDX Software, DESCUS, LARSA 4D or other bridge design / load rating software is a plus
  • This position extensive time in the field, 50% field and 50% office, or as necessary

  • Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges (FHWA-NHI-130078)
  • Bridge Coatings Inspections (FHWA-NHI-130079)
  • Inspection and Maintenance of Ancillary Highway Structures (FHWA-NHI-130087)
  • Hazardous Bridge Coatings: Design and Management of Maintenance and Removal Operations (FHWA-NHI-130069) 
  • College level courses in statics, steel design, concrete design and strength of materials
