We currently have a great assignment for a Sr. Structural Engineer / Project Manager with one of our top clients.  Our client is a full-service consulting firm offering a wide array of Program and Construction Management, Project Controls and Engineering services.

Job Responsibilities

The Sr. Structural Engineer / Project Manager will oversee multiple projects ranging in value from a few thousand dollars to over one million dollars in design fees and will participate in the allocation of resources to ensure an efficient, timely, and quality project while achieving and improving the profit margin.The location for this position would be in either Winchester, VA or Dulles, VA.


The Sr. Structural Project Manager will be responsible for the following:

  • Research and advice on the best engineering solution to meet with client's needs and budget
  • Investigates sites to determine the most suitable infrastructure improvements for proposed construction
  • Prepares proposals for engineering services.  Must be able to develop man-hour estimates to complete prior to and during engineering tasks and be able to assess level of completion at all stages of design
  • Supervises junior structural engineers, designers and engineering technicians in the performance of engineering services
  • Develops and approves the appropriate schedules for prime and / or sub-consultant work and project invoicing
  • Market with district officialsto establish contacts to help win business
  • Coordinates with other engineering disciplines, architects, landscape architects, environmental consultants and other project consultants
  • Establishes detailed programs for the coordination of engineering field work activities
  • Organizes and conducts feasibility and planning studies
  • Performs engineering analysis of design options and prepares associated reports
  • Leads the preparation of engineering calculations and technical reports required for the design of projects and supervises the development of construction drawings and specifications
  • Produces detailed designs and documentation packages including plans, specifications, cost estimates and construction schedules for the construction and implementation of bridge design and rehabilitation projects
  • Attends project meetings as a Project Manager or Senior Structural Engineer as required
  • Schedules meetings as necessary to clarify or settle major project issues
  • Reviews / Approves project sub-consultant / vendor invoices along with assigned Project Accountant in a timely manner
  • Works with Contracts Administration Department to ensure that subcontracts are drafted and executed in a timely fashion to facilitate project schedule
  • Closely monitors all sub-consultant performance in order to ascertain that each sub-consultant is in compliance with all provisions and requirements
  • Manages and monitors the shop drawing submittal and RFI process as it pertains to the contractual scope of work during the construction phases of assigned projects
  • Ensures that changes are correctly updated into project budget and other job-tracking mechanisms
  • Efficiently completes project closeout in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Develops new business opportunities relative to a client or group of clients
  • Communicates the planned means and methods of completing project designs to appropriate parties associated with the project to ensure individual understanding of goals and responsibilities
  • Responsible for project compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations applicable to a project’s design
  • Interfaces with project owners and/or contractors on behalf of our client
  • Assumes responsibility for project profit margins and manages financial aspects of the project
  • Monitors and maintains the minimum profit margin projected at job start
  • Reports to appropriate personnel deviations in margins, costs to complete “Projections” or other matters affecting projected margins
  • Mitigates the effects of deviations to the project budget
  • Ensure quality standards of the contract are included in all subcontracts and other agreements
  • Maintains excellent customer satisfaction levels at all times by timely addressing client concerns
  • Assures that all correspondence, submittals, drawings, specifications, reports etc. are produced with a high level of professionalism
  • Coordinates and cooperates with Senior Engineers and Technical Leads in multi-discipline contracts to assure the success of the assigned project
  • Cooperates, participates, and encouraging the participation of others in corporate and outside professional development programs
  • Perform QC / QA on all work from the structural design department

Job Requirements

Specific qualifications for the Sr. Structural Engineer /Project Manager role includes:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field, with an emphasis on bridge / structural design is required
  • 15+ years of Bridge / Structural Design experience with at least 2 years of progressive project management experience
  • Managed a team of structural engineers
  • Must have VDOT experience, MDSHA and DDOT is preferred
  • Must be a registered professional engineer in at least one of the following, or able to obtain by reciprocity:  Virginia, Maryland and / or District of Columbia
  • Experience using Micro-station and / or AutoCAD is required
  • Proficiency with BrR (AASHTOWare Bridge Rating) software, STAAD, MDX Software, DESCUS and / or other bridge design / load rating software is preferred
