RealStreet currently has a great opportunity for a Director of Engineering in Chicago, IL. This individual will support our client, a professional engineering firm that offers a variety of environmental, engineering, industrial hygiene and survey services to clients throughout the Midwest. Job Responsibilities

The Director of Engineering will lead the operations, management and growth of the company’s engineering practice, which encompasses both the civil engineering and construction inspection departments. The Director of Engineering will work in collaboration with the leadership team, as well as other technical department leads, to reach business development objectives and achieve strategic goals.

Additional responsibilities of the Director of Engineering include:

  • Developing, implementing and monitoring one, three and five-year strategic operations and business development plans to ensure the achievement of performance goals and growth targets
  • Overseeing the civil engineering and construction inspection departments, with responsibilities to include:
    • Hiring, training, managing and mentoring staff in the civil engineering and construction inspection departments
    • Directing the performance staff to enable quality results and to ensure contract requirements are met
  • Facilitating ongoing business development efforts, for example: 
    • Managing the overall portfolio of clients, contracts, programs and projects to ensure safety, client satisfaction, contract adherence, technical quality, profitability and achievement of financial requirements
    • Working with department leads to identify growth and collaboration opportunities and manage the go/no go process for departmental pursuits
    • Contributing towards the creation of proposals and presentations in the pursuit of new business by helping to identify key opportunities, offering market insight and providing overall direction
    • Developing and maintaining strategic relationships, serving as an ambassador with current and prospective clients and partners, as well as with the general public
    • Providing leadership in problem resolution, seeking continuous feedback from existing and potential clients
    • Collaborating with marketing on branding strategies, marketing collateral, public relations and other corporate communications

Job Requirements

Job Requirements

Requirements of the Director of Engineering role include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or construction engineering
  • An active Illinois Professional Civil Engineer’s License
  • Fifteen (15) or more years of professional experience in the Architecture, Engineering or Construction industry, to include:
    • Experience working as an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Resident Engineer (RE)
    • Ten (10) or more years civil or construction engineering experience
    • Construction project and program management experience
    • Experience in the Midwest, including the greater Chicago, IL area
    • Five (5) or more years of experience in a leadership role
    • A track record of achieving financial and business development goals
    • Ability to travel throughout Illinois and its adjoining states
